What is AEO in marketing?
AEO — answer engine optimization — is making your business the answer AI engines and answer boxes give, instead of one of ten blue links. It's built on the same SEO you already know, aimed at a new finish line. Here's what changed and what to actually do.
Another year, another acronym somebody wants to bill you for. So what is AEO in marketing, really — a genuine shift, or a rebrand of work you should already be getting? Honest answer: it's both. The shift is real, the work mostly isn't new, and once you see how it fits you'll know exactly what to ask for. Explained simply, as always.
The short answer
AEO stands for answer engine optimization — the work of making your business the answer, not just a result. When someone asks Google "who's the best DUI lawyer in Houston, Texas?", asks Siri to find an emergency plumber, or types a question into an AI chat, an engine somewhere composes a single answer — and either your business is in it, or a competitor's is. SEO gets you ranked on a list people scroll past. AEO makes your business the answer they're shown.
What changed: people ask, engines answer
Search used to be keywords in, links out — "divorce attorney los angeles," ten blue links, you fight for a spot. Now people ask full questions: typed, spoken into a phone, or dropped into an AI chat. And the engines stopped handing back lists — they answer. Google's AI Overviews answer above the results. Voice assistants read out exactly one business. AI chats recommend two or three names and move on.
That's a different game with different stakes: an answer has one winner and no page two. Google will even show you the data now — how often your business shows up in AI search — which tells you how seriously they take it.
AEO vs SEO: same foundation, new finish line
Here's what the "SEO is dead" crowd gets wrong: answer engines don't invent answers from nothing. They pull from the same signals SEO has always built — crawlable sites, clear pages, schema markup that tells machines exactly what you do and where, reviews that prove people trust you, and the on-page and off-page work underneath it all. AEO isn't a replacement for SEO. It's SEO with a sharper target: instead of optimizing to rank, you optimize to be quoted.
Translation for your invoice: if someone sells you AEO as a brand-new service that replaces SEO, they're renaming work you should already be getting. The real question is whether your current SEO is built to win answers — schema, questions answered on-page, reviews — or just built to chase rankings.
What about GEO?
You'll see AEO and GEO in the same breath. GEO — generative engine optimization — is the sibling term aimed specifically at generative AI like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, where the engine writes a longer answer and picks which businesses to cite. The work overlaps heavily with AEO, but the engines behave differently enough that GEO deserves its own explanation — that post is next up on the blog.
AEO for a local business
Forget the enterprise checklists. For a local service business, AEO comes down to five moves:
- Answer real questions on your pages. The questions customers ask you on the phone, answered in plain, quotable sentences — the kind an engine can lift word-for-word. (Notice every post here ends with FAQs. That's not decoration.)
- Keep schema markup accurate. It's the machine-readable version of your business — services, area, hours, reviews. Engines read it before they quote you.
- Feed your Google Business Profile. For "near me" answers, the profile is often the answer source — complete, consistent, active.
- Stack real reviews. Engines recommend businesses other people already vouch for. Review count and freshness are a big part of what the engines check before naming you.
- Publish content worth citing. Useful, specific articles give engines a reason to treat you as the source for your trade in your city.
Do you actually need AEO?
Yes — but probably not as a new line item. More of your customers every month ask an engine "who should I call" instead of scrolling results, and that share only grows. The honest news: if your SEO is being done right, you're most of the way there already. Every website we build ships with the AEO foundation — schema, question-answering pages, review signals — because we'd rather build for where search is going than bill twice for where it's been.
And like everything in search, it's not a one-time setup. The engines change constantly — what they cite, how they answer, what they trust — so the work gets refined every month: content updated, schema current, reviews stacking. The businesses refining while everyone else argues about acronyms are the ones the engines end up quoting.

FAQs
What does AEO stand for in marketing?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization — the work of making your business the answer that AI engines, voice assistants, and Google's answer boxes give when someone asks a question, instead of just one of ten blue links they might scroll past.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO is built on top of SEO — the same clean site structure, schema markup, real reviews, and honest content. If someone tells you SEO is dead and sells you AEO as a replacement, that's a rebrand of work you should already be getting.
What's the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO targets answer engines — direct questions with direct answers, like Google's AI Overviews and voice search. GEO (generative engine optimization) targets generative AI chats like ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok, where the engine writes a longer recommendation and cites sources. Huge overlap in the actual work; we break GEO down fully in its own post.
How do I get my business into AI answers?
Answer real questions on your pages in plain, quotable sentences; keep schema markup accurate; keep your Google Business Profile complete and consistent; and build the review count — AI engines lean heavily on businesses other sources already vouch for.
Does AEO matter for a local service business?
Yes — more of your customers every month ask an AI engine "who should I call" instead of scrolling results. The good news: if you're already doing real SEO with schema, reviews, and honest content, you're most of the way there. AEO is doing that work deliberately.
