What is SEO link building?
SEO link building is getting other websites to link to yours — other people vouching for your business. It's one of the biggest reasons a competitor with a worse website outranks you. Here's how it works and what a local business should do about it.
Here's a conversation I have every week. A business owner shows me their website — and it's good. Then they show me a competitor ranking above them whose site looks like it was built in 1984. And they ask: how is that guy beating me?
Nine times out of ten, the answer is the same: it's not what's on his website. It's who's pointing at it. Fixing that has a name — SEO link building — and it's simpler to understand than the industry makes it sound. (It's the heavy artillery of off-page SEO, if you want the bigger picture.)
What a backlink actually is
A backlink is a link from someone else's website to yours. The local paper mentions your company and links to you — that's a backlink. A supplier lists you as a certified installer — backlink. Your industry association puts you in their directory — backlink. (People mix the two terms up constantly — I wrote a whole piece on link building vs backlinks if you want them straight.)
Every one of them is a vouch. Someone else, in public, telling Google: this business is real, and it's worth sending people to.
Think of it this way: your website is your resume. Backlinks are your references. You already know which one people actually trust.
Why Google cares so much
Anyone can say anything on their own website. "Top-rated." "Best in the county." Google can't take your word for it — so it counts who else is willing to put their name next to yours.
That's the whole thing. Two similar businesses, same city, same services: the one more credible websites point to wins. It has worked that way since the day Google launched, and it still works that way in the new AI answers — when the AI names a business it trusts, it's reading the same references.
So if you've ever wondered why a worse website outranks yours: it probably has better references. That's fixable. That's what link building is.
Why you can't shortcut it
One rule: quality beats quantity. A vouch from your city's newspaper is worth more than a thousand links from junk websites nobody reads — and Google can tell the difference instantly.
A warning: if an SEO company promises you 500 backlinks overnight, run. Junk links get you penalized — and the penalty isn't "it doesn't work," it's your rankings going backwards. The wrong links aren't a shortcut. They're a liability.
What good links look like for you
Good news: you don't need thousands. You're not competing with Amazon — you're competing with a handful of local businesses, and most of them have almost no links at all. A few dozen good ones can change your position. For a local service business, they look like this:
- Your chamber of commerce and real local directories
- Local news — a sponsorship, a community event, an expert quote after a rough week of weather
- For law firms: your state bar association, practice-area organizations, and legal directories like Avvo and Justia
- Law school alumni directories, CLE presentations, and the local legal aid organizations you support
- Manufacturers and suppliers listing you as a certified installer or authorized dealer
- Industry associations and licensing bodies
- The local charities and youth sports teams you sponsor
- Businesses you actually work with — the attorney who refers cases your way, the plumber who recommends your restoration company
And it all works together. Your local SEO makes your pages worth linking to. Your 5-star reviews do for customers what backlinks do for Google. Reviews, mentions, links — it's all the same currency: someone else saying you're good, which always beats saying it yourself.
Where we come in
Every website we build ships with the on-page fundamentals — that's the resume. Off-Page SEO is the add-on where we go earn the references, and the outreach is part of the service: we find the credible sites in your space, make the case for your business, and land real links the honest way. You just see the links show up.

FAQs
How long does link building take to work?
Months, not days. Most local businesses see movement in three to six months. Anyone promising first-page rankings in two weeks is planning something that gets you penalized.
Do Google reviews count as backlinks?
Not technically, but they're the same currency: third-party trust. Reviews power your map rankings, backlinks power your organic rankings. Strong local businesses need both.
How many links does a local business actually need?
Far fewer than you'd think. A few dozen quality, relevant links is often the difference between page two and the map pack.
Is link building included in the $297/mo system?
The base system includes full on-page SEO. Off-Page SEO — the ongoing outreach that earns backlinks — is a paid add-on. Give us a call and we'll tell you honestly whether you need it yet; plenty of businesses should fix their reviews first.
